This Valentine’s Day, be better prepared with a healthy and kissable mouth! Whether you’re going on a romantic date or eating out with friends and family...here are some dental tips to consider:

  • Let’s start with the basics- chocolate. Did you know that Americans spend over 300 million dollars on Valentine treats each year and about 8 billion candy hearts are sold in the first two weeks of February? Amazing! We all have naturally occuring bacteria in our mouths which, when comes into contact with the sugar in chocolate and candy, creates acid. The acid attacks your teeth which then leads to tooth decay. Tooth decay can lead to cavities, or destruction of the outer layer of enamel followed by the inner layer of dentin underneath the enamel that leads to the tooth nerve chamber. Sounds terrible right?  But we all love our sweets so instead of saying more, how about we suggest a few solutions instead.
    • Rinse your mouth to remove some of that sugar after eating.
    • If possible brush your teeth.
    • Chew some sugar-free gum right after eating.
    • Always consider healthier options such as indulging in dark chocolate instead. Did you know that dark chocolate contains a compound called a flavonoid, which can help slow down the decay process?
  • How can we mention Valentine’s Day and not mention kissing? If kissing is on your agenda, you should know that kissing stimulates saliva which can help fight cavities.  Sad news is, if you or the person you’re kissing has poor dental health, you stand the chance of getting/spreading germs and illnesses. Brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes (dentist recommended) and cleaning between your teeth, can help you achieve cleaner kisses and a cavity-free smile.
    • So brush twice daily
    • Be sure to floss
  • Bad breath is a turn off for everyone, Valentine’s Day or not. Good habits like brushing twice a day and flossing are key to battling bad bacteria which is cause of bad breath as mentioned before. You can also stay fresh with antimicrobial mouthwashes or sugarless gum. Both can freshen your breath instantly and get saliva flowing—especially after you eat foods with a strong scent such as onions, fish and spicy foods.
    • Mouthwash - consider a travel size for when you are dining out.
    • Sugar free gum - be sure to pick the minty flavors that can combat the odor of some meals better.
  • If you are one of folks out there that happen to be timing up your first date with Valentine's Day, then keep in mind first impressions matter.  Nothing makes a better first impression that a beautiful smile. Even if it’s not first date territory, consider a teeth whitening treatment. It’s a great way to keep the aesthetics of your smile tip top.
